Biography

Emily Mitchell is a Loeb Classical Library Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow affiliated with the Department of Classics. Her research interests include Latin literature, Latin epigraphy, Roman social history, and ancient slavery. Her current book project examines the phenomenon of Latin funerary poetry for enslaved and freed persons in the Roman empire, including inscribed verse epitaphs, literary epigrams, and poems of consolation. Before coming to Brown, Emily received her PhD in Classical Philology from Harvard University in 2025, and she was a 2024–25 Rome Prize Fellow in Ancient Studies at the American Academy in Rome.
